The Challenge
A pharmaceutical company based in India was facing stability issues with a new oral tablet formulation. The product was extremely hygroscopic and highly sensitive to oxygen, leading to consistent failures in long-term stability testing.
To address this, the company attempted multiple packaging strategies using standard 60 mL HDPE bottles, combined with high loads of desiccants and oxygen scavengers. However, it proved impractical — requiring up to 6 grams of desiccant and 200 cc of oxygen scavenger, which significantly increased cost and compromised packaging efficiency.
The Solution
LOG proposed the use of its advanced 150 mL MultiBlock barrier bottle, engineered to provide:
- 100x lower oxygen transmission rate (OTR) compared to standard HDPE
- 4x lower moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR)
This multilayer bottle offered a passive barrier solution with far better protection —reducing the need for active components.
The Result
By switching to LOG’s MultiBlock packaging, the customer successfully stabilized the formulation using just:
- 1 gram of desiccant
- 20 cc of oxygen scavenger
This resulted in a dramatic improvement in packaging efficiency and, while meeting all regulatory stability criteria.
The product has since passed all required stability tests and is now commercially launched using the MultiBlock bottle as its primary packaging.
