When a leading Indian pharmaceutical company encountered serious stability issues with a promising new oral tablet, they turned to LOG Pharma Primary Packaging for a solution. The formulation was both extremely hygroscopic and highly oxygen-sensitive, a combination that proved problematic during long-term stability testing.
Despite repeated efforts using standard 60 mL High density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles loaded with active protection systems, the product consistently failed stability benchmarks. The company tried using up to 6 grams of desiccant and 200 cc of oxygen scavenger per bottle, but this created new challenges: high material costs, bulky packaging, and inefficiencies in production and logistics.
LOG proposed replacing the conventional HDPE bottles with its 150 mL MultiBlock barrier bottle, an advanced multilayer packaging solution designed specifically for sensitive formulations.
The MultiBlock bottle offers:
- 100x lower oxygen transmission rate (OTR) compared to standard HDPE
- 4x lower moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR)
- This multilayer bottle offered a passive barrier solution with far better protection reducing the need for active components
With LOG’s MultiBlock packaging, the pharmaceutical company was able to stabilize its formulation using just 1 gram of desiccant and 20 cc of oxygen scavenger.
This dramatic reduction in active packaging components translated into greater packaging efficiency, streamlined production, and lower total cost. Most importantly, the new packaging passed all required long-term stability tests, clearing the way for regulatory approval and commercial launch.
This case highlights the importance of choosing the right primary packaging, especially for formulations sensitive to moisture and oxygen. LOG’s MultiBlock technology provides a passive, high-barrier solution that empowers pharmaceutical companies to:
- Reduce the required amount of active desiccants and oxygen scavengers Improve packaging efficiency
- Accelerate time-to-market for sensitive products
At LOG, we’re happy to help our partners overcome their toughest packaging challenges with innovative and tailor-made solutions.
